First Friday kicks off new year in Ashland

"Cascading," by Pam Haunschild, is part of Art & Soul Gallery's "Small Works" exhibit.

Galleries in downtown Ashland and its Railroad District unveil new exhibits, host art demonstrations and live music from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. Some artists will be on hand to discuss their work. Art walk maps are available at any of the venues.

Gallerie Karon opens its traditional show, “East Meets East,” with a nod to the start of the new year in many Asian countries. New items to explore are from Afghanistan and Tibet. The gallery’s new addition, The Feathered Wing, features two rooms. One is filled with small, versatile pieces of furniture and art, and the second holds a striking mix of oriental furniture, antiques and icons. A reception will be held during Friday’s art walk on Jan. 4. Look for live music, munchies and many surprises.

Art & Soul Gallery opens its “Small Work” exhibit, small treasures showcasing the artistic talents of the gallery’s members. Look for original art in a variety of genre and media. A reception will be held with live music by Beth and Craig Martin and Todd Ragland.

Paula Fong will display her paintings in watercolor and ink at Creekside Pizza. Fong, who holds a master’s in ecology from Oregon State University, has illustrated many scientific publications, plant and wildlife posters, trail guides and interpretive trail signs.

“Travel Journaling with Watercolor,” an exhibit of small paintings by Darlene Southworth, will be displayed at the Ashland Art Center. Southworth hikes around the country painting in small, bound journals. The journals are a personal response to her travels, expressing what she sees, experiences and feels. In 2017, she was artist-in-residence at the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Look for live music by folk duo Hollis Peach.
