St. Mary’s girls dominate Day 1 at district

KLAMATH FALLS — St. Mary’s put forth a historic effort Monday with a 318 total to take a commanding lead in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 girls golf district tournament at the Running Y Ranch Resort.

With Baylee Hammericksen (71), Kaylee Wu (73) and Kamryn Ford (78) posting the top three scores Monday, the two-time defending state champion Crusaders built a whopping 86-stroke lead over second-place Cascade Christian (404) entering today’s final round.

“That’s the lowest I’ve seen us score in my three years,” said St. Mary’s head coach Kevin Klabunde, “and I would bet it’s the lowest ever score for St. Mary’s.”

“That’s a pretty formidable team,” he added of his squad. “There have been many years where I’ve been coachign boys teams that couldn’t score a 318.”

Grace Johnson broke 100 for the first time by tallying a 96, good for eighth place, to round out the Crusaders’ scorers.

As good of a day as the St. Mary’s enjoyed, it could’ve been even better, according to Klabunde, were it not for a lipped-out putts.

“They all had a few putting issues even with those good scores,” said the coach, “so I feel confident that if we get those squared around we could even be better.”

The leading trio for St. Mary’s took advantage of their length off the tee to set up several birdie opportunities Monday.

“They’re all really striking the ball well from tee to green,” said Klabunde, “and I think that’s the key.”

The top two teams from the district tournament and top five individuals, regardless if on qualifying teams, will qualify for next week’s state tournament.
