PREP SOCCER: Local trio earn all-state


    Ashland, Eagle Point and Phoenix each placed one boys soccer player on the first-team all-state lists made available recently after voting by the state’s boys and girls soccer coaches from the Class 6A, 5A and 4A levels.

    The Class 3A/2A/1A teams have already been published.

    Ashland junior Scott Gustafson, Eagle Point junior Martin Hernandez and Phoenix freshman Victor Martinez each earned first-team acclaim at their respective levels.

    In 5A boys, Gustafson had eight goals and eight assists overall and seven and six, respectively, in league. Hernandez amassed 26 goals and 14 assists overall and 13 goals and nine assists in league. They shared Midwestern League player-of-the-year honors.

    In 4A boys soccer, Martinez scored 17 goals, including game winners against Mazama, Marist and North Valley, and also dished out two assists to help Phoenix score a league-high 47 goals. He was named the Skyline conference player of the year.

    Earning 4A second-team honors were Phoenix senior forward Bryson Flenner and senior goalkeeper Moises Rivera.

    In 6A girls soccer, South Medford senior Madelyn Pineda was a second-team honoree.

    At the 4A girls soccer level, North Valley senior Baylee Touey was named player of the year and Hidden Valley’s Dennis Hart was named coach of the year.

    Hidden Valley seniors Bailey Hart and Nyah Kendall and sophomore goalkeeper Kaiah Fisher were named to the first team, with senior Mustangs player Megan Potter named to the second team. North Valley senior Tatiana Kelly was also on the second team.
