North uses late surge to top Eagle Point

    North Medford used a five-run fifth inning to separate from Eagle Point on Thursday for an 8-2 victory in nonconference softball at North Medford.

    Jenna Stevens slapped an RBI single to tie the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth and, with two outs, Amanda Wolfe followed with an RBI double for the eventual game winner for the Black Tornado.

    North Medford tacked on three more runs with two outs in the inning, with Tejay Schmidt and Kimmy Glazier each supplying RBI singles and another run scoring on an error.

    Taylor Schmidt put an exclamation mark on the season-opening comeback with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a single by Amanda Freitas.

    Taylor Schmidt also earned the pitching victory with five strikeouts and no walks, while Stevens was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

    Jennie Fernandes belted a pair of doubles in the leadoff spot for Eagle Point.

    PHOENIX 11, CHILOQUIN 3 — Phoenix's Chandler Tally and Carlee Story each had three hits in the nonconference makeup game at U.S. Cellular Community Park in Medford.

    Storey had three runs, three RBIs and five stolen bases for the Pirates (2-0). Tally had a triple, double and three runs. MacKenzie Welburn and Kirstin Stroud had two-run singles.

    Stroud got the win in relief, allowing six hits in 51/3 innings. She fanned three and didn't walk anyone.

    Cheyenna Kirkpatrick was 3-for-3 and scored four runs for the Loggers (2-0), Yolanda Ramirez was 2-for-3 and Billie Garote ripped a three-run triple in a 10-run third.
