North Medford’s wrestling team made a big move on Day 2 of the Southwest Conference district championships to finish second in the team standings, scoring six champions and one runner-up showing to lead the charge Saturday at Grants Pass High.

Roseburg was the runaway winner again, posting 543.5 points and six champions of its own to separate from the runner-up Black Tornado (310) and third-place Grants Pass (280).

Sheldon finished fourth at 103 points, followed by South Medford (96) and South Eugene (43).

North Medford was able to get things rolling right away, with 106-pound sophomore Alex Silva scoring a 6-4 decision over Roseburg’s Cameron Cross in their championship match.

Things heated up from there as the Black Tornado got on a nice roll, scoring individual titles in the lower weights by juniors Enrique Jaime (120), Benjamin Zeigler (132) and Cole Zoller (138) and senior Andres Ramirez (145).

Jullian Stone also put forth a championship effort for North Medford at 220, while fellow senior Thomas Hamilton finished second at 160 to highlight a total of nine state qualifiers for the Black Tornado.

Jaime pinned Grants Pass sophomore Josef Miner in 3 minutes, 51 seconds to earn a repeat trip to the Class 6A state tournament next week, and Zeigler followed with a 28-second pin of South Medford sophomore Kilian Cosgrove.

Zoller battled his way to a 12-7 decision over Roseburg’s Caleb Jeffers to continue the Black Tornado run, and Ramirez kept the momentum going with a pin of Roseburg’s Tristin David in 1:32.

The only stumbling block North had in the finals was when Hamilton dropped an 8-0 major decision to Roseburg’s Darian Thacker, but Stone made sure the Black Tornado finished 6-for-7 in the finals by holding off Roseburg’s Hunter Blix for a 5-3 decision.

Also qualifying for the state tournament for North Medford were third-place finishers Ethan Miller (152) and Tanner Gaoiran (170), giving the Tornado a total of nine at next week’s tourney.

South Medford freshman joined Cosgrove in making the finals but was pinned in 43 seconds by Roseburg’s Nash Singleton at 113.

Senior Andrew Hall joined his Panther teammates in qualifying for state by placing third at 145 after securing a 7-5 sudden victory overtime win against Roseburg’s Riley Rose in their third-place final.

The top three wrestlers from each weight class qualified for the 6A state tournament in Portland.
