BOYS BASKETBALL: Bittle double-double boosts Comets

    CENTRAL POINT — Nate Bittle scored 17 points to lead three Crater players in double figures as the sixth-ranked Comets defeated Ashland, 51-46, in Midwestern League boys basketball.

    Bittle, a sophomore wing, also contributed 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

    The Comets (16-7, 10-4 MWL) enjoyed a big advantage from the free-throw line. They were 20-for-26 from the line compared to 8 of 15 for the Grizzlies (6-15, 2-12).

    Senior guard KJ Pippa paced Ashland with 18 points, while Nate Desmond added 12 and Lowell Saulsbury chipped in 10.

    HIDDEN VALLEY 97, PHOENIX 74: At Grants Pass, Phoenix drained a whopping 18 3-pointers, including seven by junior guard Nico Ortega, but Hidden Valley got 33 points by senior post Joe Blanton and finished its season on a high note.

    Ortega scored 23 points, Ethan Hutsell 18 and Braeden Watts 15 to lead the Pirates (12-12, 3-7 Skyline). Hutsell and Watts hit four 3-pointers apiece for Phoenix.

    The Mustangs (12-11, 3-7), who avenged a 26-point loss to the Pirates on Feb. 1, received 16 points from Ezra McLean and led 52-41 at the half.
