Spartans surge past Admirals in WSHL hockey

    Southern Oregon used a pair of goals by Eric Vanderhoff and a second-period surge to take control Saturday night and lead the Spartans to a 6-3 win over the visiting West Sound Admirals in Western States Hockey League action at The RRRink.

    Each team scored a pair of goals in the first period, with Rhys Cottle and Yuval Halpert doing the honors for Southern Oregon, but after that it was all Spartans.

    Southern Oregon (18-29) opened the second period with goals by Vojtech Svoboda and Artem Popov before Vanderhoff tallied his first goal of the game. Vanderhoff scored again to open the third period and build a 6-2 cushion.

    The Spartans outshot the Admirals, 46-20.

    Ian Hofmann scored twice for West Sound (9-38) and Sarp Demirezen added the other goal.

    The teams resume the series at 2:15 p.m. today at The RRRink.
