ASHLAND — Senior forward Ariel Augustine scored a career-high 25 points and had a big hand in a first-half downpour from downtown as Southern Oregon’s women’s basketball team eased to a 73-49 win over Walla Walla (Wash.) Friday afternoon at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

The 18th-ranked Raiders (9-4 overall, 5-2 Cascade Conference) combined for 11 3-pointers in the first and second quarters, their highest total in a single half in at least a decade. Augustine hit three of them and finished 10-of-17 from the field with seven rebounds.

The Raiders hit 11-of-23 from deep before halftime, going up 30-10 after a quarter, and went 12-of-36 for the game. Junior point guard Daranda Hinkey accounted for two 3-pointers and recorded 11 points and three assists.

The Wolves (2-14, 1-6) stayed winless in eight all-time meetings with SOU. The teams will run it back at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Playing with a short-handed bench, the Raiders got eight points, seven rebounds and four assists out of freshman Dominique Harding in a spot start. Danasia Allison scored eight and Mallory Heard had a pair of 3-pointers with six boards, marking season-highs for both freshmen.

Delaney Sparling (6 points, 5 assists) was the fourth Raider with multiple triples. Destinee Jones added 10 rebounds and three steals and Kenadee Honaker compiled five points, eight boards and four steals.

The Raiders went 28-of-71 overall, racking up 19 more field-goal attempts than the Wolves thanks to a 21-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

    Wrestling

SOU MEN GO 1-2: At Louisville, Ky., the 12th-ranked Southern Oregon University men’s wrestling team fell one win short of the placing rounds Friday at the NWCA-NAIA National Duals, going 1-2 at the Kentucky Expo Center.

The Raiders opened with a 23-15 setback against No. 11 Missouri Valley, stayed alive with a 42-14 win against Bethany (Kan.), and were eliminated 22-19 by No. 13 Southeastern (Fla.). The losses spoiled three perfect individual efforts: 10th-ranked Pancho Barrera (125 pounds), fourth-ranked Tanner Fischer (197) and 13th-ranked Devin Poppen (149) each went 2-0 and accepted a forfeit apiece.

Fischer, who improved to 8-1 in dual matches, defeated a pair of ranked opponents in No. 20 Terry Martin of Bethany and No. 12 Luis Peguero of Southeastern. After three bonus-point losses put the Raiders in a hole against MVC, his 13-12 defeat of Martin trimmed their deficit to 20-15. Jesse Gomez sealed it for MVC in the heavyweight match by outlasting Max Hane, 13-6.

Barrera improved to 4-0 in dual matches since debuting last month.

The 16-team tournament, which includes 14 teams listed in the latest NAIA Top 20 poll, concludes Saturday.
