PREP ROUNDUP: Challengers push win streak to 8

LAKEVIEW — No Austin Maurer, still no problem for the second-ranked Cascade Christian boys basketball team Wednesday night.

With the reigning Class 3A state player of the year on the sidelines, the Challengers didn’t miss a beat in cruising past host Lakeview for an 83-30 victory in Far West League play.

Cascade Christian sophomore Drew Hall poured in 22 points to go with 10 assists and five steals and Eli Bryant added 16 points, four rebounds and two blocks to lead the Challengers (10-2, 4-0 FWL).

Jaren Fronckowiak also added a strong all-around game with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists and Peyton Maurer had 10 points and six boards in the eighth straight win for Cascade.

Trevor Owens scored eight points to lead Lakeview (3-8, 1-2), which fell behind 21-11 after one quarter and 48-16 by halftime.

LAKEVIEW 64, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 31: At Lakeview, Emma Coats and Jordynn Jones each scored six points but Cascade Christian dug too deep of a hole with an 18-3 deficit through one quarter in the Far West League matchup.

Timnah Roberson added five points for the Challengers (6-7, 2-2).

Karlee Vickerman and Tyler McNeley each scored 14 points to lead Lakeview (11-2, 3-0 FWL).

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 54, ST. MARY’S 22: At Brookings, Maddie Ward tallied 12 points and Saniyah Ayala added eight for St. Mary’s in the Far West League loss.

The Crusaders (1-7, 1-2 FWL) rallied to trail only 19-12 at halftime but could not gain more ground in the second half.

Ashlyn Schofield had 21 points and Rockette Marrington added 15 for the Bruins (7-6, 3-1).

EAGLE POINT 47, SOUTH MEDFORD 27: Eagle Point used five pins and a pair of close decisions to pull away from Class 6A South Medford in an entertaining nonleague dual between both local squads.

Bridger Foss remained unbeaten on the season for South Medford with a pin over Gavin Pogue at 152 pounds in a spotlight match, while Panthers teammate Isaack Valdez followed with a pin at 160 to break up what had been a five-match win streaks for the Eagles.

Brian Brown secured a 5-2 victory over Caleb Dalke at 182 in a big win for the Eagles, while South Medford started the night with consecutive pins by Vaughn Graff (106) and Kristian Hernandez-Topete (113).

SOUTH BOYS WIN: At Eugene, South Medford ran its Southwest Conference boys record to 4-0 with an 80-76 win over Sheldon late Tuesday night that could not be completed due to time constraints.

Cole Schiffer scored a pair of individual wins for the Panthers in the 50-yard freestyle (25.47 seconds) and 100 freestyle (55.49), while Chase Powell won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 23:67 seconds and Joey Schoenhals touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:10.39) and 500 freestyle (6:09.81).

South Medford also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.97) and 200 medley relay (1:56.12).

The short-handed Panther girls were missing a few key components due to injuries and fell 103-50 to the Irish.

Ellie Carson still was able to put together winning efforts in the 100 free (59.34) and 100 backstroke (1:07.45), while Tawan Buranathamawat finished first in the 500 free (7:02.13).
