Crater, South finish 1-2 in NorCal tourney

Host Eagle Point dominates to claim Invitational title

ANDERSON, Calif. — Crater and South Medford made sure Southern Oregon was well-represented during the NorCal “Beast in the North” wrestling tournament Saturday, with the local schools finishing in the top two spots after securing a combined three championships.

Crater’s Ty Havniear was as dominant as one could get in securing a title in the 152-pound weight class, pinning all five of his opponents in the first round to leave no doubt.

Comets teammate Joey Hutchins scored his team’s other title at 126, using a 4-1 decision in the championship match over Etna’s Colton Downey to cap his undefeated run.

Crater also managed runner-up runs from Jaret Hickey (120) and Kutter Christensen (138) after advancing four of its five semifinalists to claim the team trophy with 185.5 points. Every Comet that competed scored at least one point in the event.

Also for Crater, Ayden Tazioli placed third at 145 and Boston Tazioli was fourth at 132.

Boosted by a championship performance from Bridger Foss (160), South Medford finished runner-up in the team standings at 161.5 points.

Foss scored his third pin in the tournament during the championship finals, dispatching Corning Union’s Ian Brown in 4 minutes, 44 seconds to remain unbeaten on the season and earn his fourth straight tourney title.

Caleb Dalke scored a tight 6-5 decision over Lassen’s Deshon Moore in his third-place match at 182 for the Panthers, who also saw Kristian Hernandez-Topete place third at 106 with a pin in 3:41 over Shasta’s Cooper Hurst.
