Crater, South finish 1-2 in NorCal tourney
ANDERSON, Calif. — Crater and South Medford made sure Southern Oregon was well-represented during the NorCal “Beast in the North” wrestling tournament Saturday, with the local schools finishing in the top two spots after securing a combined three championships.
Crater’s Ty Havniear was as dominant as one could get in securing a title in the 152-pound weight class, pinning all five of his opponents in the first round to leave no doubt.
Comets teammate Joey Hutchins scored his team’s other title at 126, using a 4-1 decision in the championship match over Etna’s Colton Downey to cap his undefeated run.
Crater also managed runner-up runs from Jaret Hickey (120) and Kutter Christensen (138) after advancing four of its five semifinalists to claim the team trophy with 185.5 points. Every Comet that competed scored at least one point in the event.
Also for Crater, Ayden Tazioli placed third at 145 and Boston Tazioli was fourth at 132.
Boosted by a championship performance from Bridger Foss (160), South Medford finished runner-up in the team standings at 161.5 points.
Foss scored his third pin in the tournament during the championship finals, dispatching Corning Union’s Ian Brown in 4 minutes, 44 seconds to remain unbeaten on the season and earn his fourth straight tourney title.
Caleb Dalke scored a tight 6-5 decision over Lassen’s Deshon Moore in his third-place match at 182 for the Panthers, who also saw Kristian Hernandez-Topete place third at 106 with a pin in 3:41 over Shasta’s Cooper Hurst.
Finishing fourth for South Medford were Isaack Valdez (160) and Li Moala (220), while Vaughn Graff (106), Cameron Johnson (126) and Carson Terry (132) each placed fifth.
Crater’s Sienna Caruso was named outstanding girls wrestler for the tournament.
EAGLE POINT INVITATIONAL: At Eagle Point, Tygren Lopez (132 pounds), Gavin Pogue (152) and Brian Cortez (195) each secured championships for host Eagle Point.
The Eagles added runner-up showings from Ethan Metcalf (126), Nathan Mallari (138), Brian Brown (170) and Garrett Matthews (285) to win the 13-school event in runaway fashion.
Placing third for the Eagles were Devin Mattheisen (113), Sean McFall (120), Diego De La Cruz (132), David Brown (160) and Vincent Noble (182).
Eagle Point scored 229.5 points to easily toppled runner-up Grants Pass, which had 168, for the team title.
Ashland’s Alan Helsel won the title at 182 while teammates Perrin Helsel (138) and Will Downs (170) placed third.
North Medford’s Robert Caster won by default over teammate David Fuiava in the third-place final at 285.
In the girls tournament, North Medford scored first-place efforts from Skyler Hall (100-110A), Isabella Gutches (100-110B), Sadie Hall (125B), Rocio Perez (130-135A), Kiana Patrick (130-135B), Isabella Prinslow (145), Isabella Jaime (155) and Lalaine Chan (195-235).
Eagle Point girls champions were Lexi Penney (120A) and Amanda Hammer (170A), while Asland’s Sophia Cellini was first in the 125A division.
