BOYS HOOPS: North nets clutch win over Lakeridge
Houston Klug drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the key inside the final minute for a go-ahead basket and, after a defensive stand, free throws by Andrew Plankenhorn and Ty Carpenter sealed North Medford’s 43-38 nonleague home victory over Lakeridge Friday night.
In his debut after being ineligible but still practicing during North’s 1-9 start to the season, senior Antonio Orozco contributed six points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
“He gave us a lift on both ends of the floor, for sure,” said Black Tornado head coach Scott Plankenhorn. “He was rusty as rusty could be even though he had been practicing, but the energy level and the playmaking level just helped us with everything. He gave us a lot of stuff.”
Corban Young led the Black Tornado (2-9) with nine points and six rebounds, while Klug finished with eight points and Miguel Torres provided a lift off the bench with seven points.
After Jace Swygard was fouled on a driving shot off the glass with 1:15 to play, he was unable to connect for a three-point play and left the window open for North as the Pacers’ lead stood at 38-37.
The teams exchanged missed scoring opportunities on their ensuing possessions but the Tornado drew up a play that eventually saw Davis Carr break down the defense and then kick the ball out to a wide-open Klug, who delivered from beyond the arc.
“We had that play in our bag but we hadn’t run it in a long time,” said Plankenhorn. “We knew they were kind of jumping everything with Antonio so Andrew got it to Davis and then he made the extra one to Houston.”
Patrick Napierala scored 12 points for Lakeridge (6-5) but his 3-pointer from the corner missed the mark with 4.3 seconds to play.
