Plaintiff in landmark climate lawsuit to speak

Kiran Oommen, one of 21 young plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to protect the public trust against climate change, will speak at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson, Medford.

Oommen, 22, a senior at Seattle University, is one of the oldest plaintiffs in the case known as Juliana vs. United States. The youngest is 11 years old. Oommen has been a plaintiff in the lawsuit since his senior year in high school. The case has not yet gone to trial. Last month, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the government’s petition for a delay, one of many such motions filed by the defendant.

Oommen is a member of the Board of Directors for the Civil Liberties Defense Center in his home town of Eugene.
