Local wineries earn Best of Show

    The Oregon Wine Competition has released its list of award winners from the Oregon Wine Experience event being held in Jacksonville, with Best of Show awards going to Cuckoo's Nest Cellars in Gold Hill, Pebblestone Cellars in Phoenix and Plaisance Ranch in the Williams area.

    Cuckoo's Nest Cellars earned a top honor for its 2015 Fizzé, Early Muscat (winemaker Bryan Wilson, retail $15), Pebblestone Cellars for its 2015 Viognier, (winemaker Bryan Wilson, retail $25) and Plaisance Ranch for its 2013 Syrah (winemaker Joe Ginet, retail $30).

    Winemakers receiving top awards were Wilson, Ginet, Herb Quady and Brian Grubert. In all, 62 vintners received 130 double gold, gold, and silver medals.

    The competition, open to wineries throughout Oregon, attracted 218 wines in 30 classifications, made by 56 winemakers for 68 wineries. The wine entries consisted of 66 white, 136 red and 16 rosé and dessert wines.

    The wines were judged by a panel of six nationally renowned experts, three of them with Masters of Wine certifications. Double gold medals were awarded to wines receiving gold medal scores from all judges on a panel and a Best of Show award was given to the top wine in each of three categories: white, red and other (blush, sparkling and dessert).
