Man killed while trying to cross I-5

    The scene near Central Point where a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Thursday morning.

    A 26-year-old Eagle Point man who tried to cross Interstate 5 in fog and darkness died after being struck by a vehicle near Central Point Thursday morning, Oregon State Police said.

    The crash happened at about 6:15 a.m. near milepost 33, according to dispatch records. Richard Drew Wilson was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the freeway near the exit 33 interchange when a Nissan Xterra driven by Medford resident Jeri Renee Wiggins, 52, hit him, OSP reported.

    “Visibility in the area was limited by darkness and dense fog,” OSP said in a news release.

    Wilson died at the scene.

    Northbound I-5 near the crash site was reduced to a single lane for about three hours, OSP said. The Oregon Department of Transportation, Jackson County Fire District 3 and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office assisted OSP at the scene.

    The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and no charges are expected to be filed, OSP said.
