1932 - 2018
Joanna E. Prunty, 85, was born into eternal life May 19, 2018 at her home in San Diego, California. She was born in 1932 in Sedro-Woolley, Washington to Gladys (Gilbertson) and Hilaire Huyge.
After graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1950, Joanna went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Western Washington College of Education, and subsequently taught second grade. On September 25, 1954, Joanna married Clarence Prunty at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in her hometown. Together they had six children, initially raising their family in Tullahoma, Tennessee and later in Sunnyvale, Calif. Joanna was a devoted and loving mother and was active in her children’s activities. As the children began leaving home, she occasionally worked as a substitute teacher and later worked as a buyer and salesperson for a collectibles store. The couple initially retired to Medford, Oregon, where they enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and eventually relocated to San Diego, Calif. As chronic illnesses complicated her life, Joanna overcame each, adapting to and overcoming her limitations. In her later years, Joanna was still playing bridge, doing water aerobics, participating in her book club, learning new things from the History and Discovery channels, and watching NBA League Pass. Joanna enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: spending time with family and friends. She will be lovingly missed for her smile, her laugh, her sense of humor, and for making friends wherever she went.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years, Clarence (Chuck) Prunty; six children, Brenda (Alan) Bartholic of Leesburg, Va., Debbie Prunty of Warrenton, Va., Diana (Alan) Ruzicka of New Market, Ala., John (Livia) Prunty of San Diego, Calif., James (Cara) Prunty of San Jose, Calif., and Joseph (Laura) Prunty of Mequon, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. at San Rafael Catholic Church with a reception following. Burial will be June 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Miramar National Cemetery.
