Herbert A. Payne

    Herbert A. Payne went on to glory very peacefully on the beautiful day of December 23, 2011, with his wife at his bedside. He was born May 12, 1926, to Herbert and Willow Payne, in Hanover, N.M.

    Herbert grew up in Arizona and New Mexico, obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout during that time. In 1943, he left high school at Morenic, Ariz. He then enlisted on September 11, 1943, in the Navy.

    After serving over two years in the service, he entered the University of Arizona only having to quit due to medical conditions he received in the service.

    Herbert was in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, U.S. Marines Medical Corp. He was on Guam, Tinia and Iwo Jima. He received two silver stars, a purple heart and other medals.

    After service, he came to the Rogue Valley and on June 22, 1951, he married the former Betty Walch, of Lake Creek.

    Herbert worked for Medco and Puget Timber Company, before becoming manager of the sporting goods and camera department for the Big Y Shopping Center. After leaving the Big Y, he went to work as a maintenance engineer for School District 9, in White City, until his retirement.

    Herbert loved photography, hunting, camping, fishing and working with young people. He loved the wilderness as "God provided it".

    Herb was involved for several years working with young people at the Open Bible Church and was part of a drug awareness and prevention program in the 1960s and 1970s.

    Herb is survived by his wife, Betty; brother, Ray, of Eagle Point, Ore.; several nieces; nephews; and eight godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Bill.

    A memorial service will be held December 30, 2011, 1:00 p.m., at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
