March 17, 1920 - May 30, 2018
Frances McGovern, 98, of Medford, Oregon passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 after a short illness. She passed peacefully with those who loved her standing by. She was a firecracker, full of adventure, love, and determination, and those who knew her shared her love of life.
Fran was born March 17, 1920 in Mendota, Washington to Croatian immigrants. She was a pistol from the day she was born, riding log trains to school at five and caring for the family farm alone at 11. During World War II Fran worked in a munitions factory until an industrial accident gave her the means to attend college.
Shortly after the war ended Fran married Don McGovern and went on to get her Bachelor in Education from Southern Oregon College (now known as SOU) while teaching seventh grade at Eagle Point Elementary alongside her husband until his passing in 1982.
Fran taught seventh grade at Eagle Point until her retirement at which time her love of travel was fully satisfied. From Australia to Africa to Europe, Fran traveled the globe. These adventures were often undertaken with her loving companion, Bob, along for the ride.
When they weren’t traveling Bob and Fran enjoyed gardening, cooking, hosting friends and family, and spending time together.
Though Fran had no children she was loved by many and her chosen family will remember her always, from former students to dear neighbors and her friends whom she considered family. All will remember Fran fondly and raise a glass in her honor, and as they say in Croatia, “ivjeli!"
