Amateur Radio Field Day coming to ScienceWorks

Anyone interested in the HAM radio hobby should tune in to an event set for June 24 and 25 at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland.

It's part of the national Amateur Radio Field Day, and kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday and continues through the night until 11 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release. The Cascade Amateur Radio Enthusiasts Club and the Rogue Valley Amateur Radio Club will put on the event.

Anyone can attend for free. Amateur Radio Field Day events across the country are intended to showcase how radios can be used as communications during a disaster when telecommunications and the Internet are down.

Attendees can visit the "Get On The Air" booth to try out radio communications by contacting other radio operators from around the world. Jackson County Amateur Radio Services will also be there with its mobile base of operations used in the valley during emergency situations.

"All operators will be relying on solar wind power or generators, with no access to the power grid," the news release said.
