A talk on birding in the Klamath Basin is set for 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Ashland Outdoor Store at 37 North Third St.

Shannon Rio, president of the board of Klamath Bird Observatory, which is based in Ashland, will show photographs and talk about the history of the wildlife refuge established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

The Lower Klamath Lake part of the refuge was the first refuge protected specifically for migratory birds. He will also discuss the Federal Duck Stamp Story and encourage the purchase of the stamps, which support the refuge.

The Klamath Bird Observatory advances bird and habitat conservation through science, education and partnerships. John Alexander, the executive director of KBO, will be at the presentation to speak briefly on conservation, wildlife refuges and how individuals can make a difference.
