Fossen vaults to 10th in NCAAs

EUGENE — Eastern Washington senior pole vaulter Morgan Fossen cleared a personal-best 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches to tie for 10th place Thursday at the NCAA championships at Hayward Field.

Fossen, who graduated from North Medford in 2016, had previously reached 13-8 1/4 during the West Regional two weeks ago to qualify for the championships.

Fossen’s journey Thursday began with clearance of the opening height of 13-3 1/2 before missing on her first attempt after the bar was raised to 13-9 1/4. She then cleared the bar on her next pass, but missed on three attempts after the bar moved to 14-1 1/4, which would have been a school-record height.

The 13-9 1/4 height extended Fossen’s own second-place mark in EWU history.

Lisa Gunnarsson of LSU passed on the opening height and cleared the following four levels before passing again to make three failed attempts at 14-9. The junior was the lone pole vaulter to clear the 14-5 1/4 to win by two inches over four others that finished at 14-3 1/4.
