The redesigned restaurant includes a double-lane, 24-hour drive-thru, a PlayPlace structure and video games. Last year, McDonald's USA announced a $1 billion redesign to the majority of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants by 2015. The chain targeted 800 new remodels, 225 rebuilds and 175 new store openings in 2012.

Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development Inc., has scheduled a tour of four Josephine County manufacturers on Thursday, Oct. 4.

SOREDI's 12th tour of local companies features Grants Pass firms Mycorrhizal Applications and Recognition Specialties, along with Duro-Last Roofing in the North Valley area, and Alltrax in Wilderville.

The tour, held in conjunction with Oregon Manufacturer's Extension Partnership, begins at the Grants Pass Holiday Inn Express and includes lunch at the River's Edge Restaurant.

In anticipation of National Manufacturing Day on Oct. 5, OMEP will make a presentation, "It's Not Luck! Strategies that will Grow Your Company," during the lunch hour.

SOREDI's Industry Tour begins at 8 a.m., with the first stop at Mycorrhizal Applications, a soil amendment company that recently moved into a new Grants Pass facility and Duro-Last roofing, a nationwide commercial roofing manufacturer, based in the North Valley Industrial Park since 1996. Thereafter, the group will travel to Wilderville to tour Alltrax, a manufacturer of Electric Vehicle HI-Performance DC Motor Controllers.

The final stop after lunch will be Recognition Specialties in Grants Pass, a manufacturer of name badges and awards for more than 25 years.

Registration is $30 for SOREDI members, $45 for nonmembers. Space is limited. People who wish to attend only the OMEP presentation at lunch may register for free but must register through SOREDI. Registration for the tour and the lunch is available online at www.soredi.org/BuyProducts.asp.

PremierWest Bank has introduced "Community Star Award," a Facebook-based challenge to honor volunteerism in the communities it serves.

There will be six awards annually for people who excel in their community through volunteerism. Nominations and voting are decided by the community via a viral social media campaign. Each of the two-month-long Facebook promotions will focus on volunteers belonging to certain demographic groups — military veterans, families, seniors, youths, teachers and service workers.

The first category is military veterans, who serve in their community after serving in the armed forces

An online form is available for nominations at http://bit.ly/veteransedition. The top three vote-getters will be reviewed by a panel of judges.

Each of the top three "stars" will have a donation made in their name to the charity of their choice by PremierWest Bank.
