Police hold golf club beating suspect on $500,000 bail

Medford police have arrested a man who they believe slipped into a Progress Drive apartment last week and beat his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend with a golf club, then jumped out a window to escape.

Officers arrested Donovan David Maxwell, 21, at 11 p.m. Wednesday on a first-degree burglary charge and two counts of second-degree assault. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remains today on $500,000 bail.

Maxwell is suspected of entering an apartment in the 1100 block of Progress Drive at about 2 a.m. April 18 and attacking the sleeping couple with a golf club, Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said. The pair were injured, but were able to defend themselves and a roommate heard their shouts and came to their aid. Maxwell smashed the second-story bedroom window with the golf club, then jumped out and fled. A police dog searched the area, but didn't find him.

Investigators caught up with him last night at a family member's home in the 100 block of Winema Way, Medford, and he was arrested.
