New exhibits highlight Third Friday

Rogue Gallery & Art Center, 40 S. Bartlett St., will host a reception for artist Doug Anderson from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in its main gallery.

Anderson’s exhibit, “Stories from Around the Ring,” is a collection of acrylic paintings and drawings that depict provocative and sometimes humorous imagery of circus-like environments meant to expose the absurdity in daily life.

Anderson holds a bachelor’s of arts from the University of Arizona in Tucson and master’s of fine arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He’s taught at Eastern Oregon University and State University of New York at Geneseo. He now teaches painting and drawing at Pacific University in Forest Grove.

Ashland artist Julia Janeway’s ceramic retablos will be displayed in the art center’s community gallery. Retablos traditionally are paintings of saints. In Janeway’s interpretations, the saints are depicted as owls, birds and other animals. Her inspiration for this exhibit came from the time she spent living in Taos, New Mexico, where retablos commonly adorn homes and churches. See roguegallery.org or call 541-772-8118.

Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main St., will host an artists’ reception for watercolor artist Doug Iverson from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Iverson’s abstract paintings are improvisational. He manipulates dried paint and liberal amounts of water during his process of painting and erasing until he sees to develop.

Photographer Roy Musitelli is reinventing himself as an artist. Look for his drawings at the gallery.

Classical guitarist Rod Petrone will perform a mix of music from Brazil, Latin America and France, along with his own arrangements of Italian compositions at the reception.

Art du Jour will host a People’s Choice contest in October. Themed “Furry and Feathery Friends,” the contest is open to all mediums. See facebook.com/artdujourgallery for details.
