The Grant & Matheny Duo

Pianist Darrell Grant and flugelhorn player Dmitri Matheny will present an exploration of traditional jazz and classical music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 25, at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland.

Grant and Matheny made their debut as a duo in 1996 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Grant & Matheny Duo recorded its debut album last year at the Old Siskiyou Barn. The self-titled release on Papillion Records will be available at the June 25 concert, and proceeds will benefit the Siskiyou Institute's Artists in Schools program.

The duo will present a arrangements of spirituals, works by classical composers such as Samuel Barber and Johann Sebastian Bach, tunes by Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk, pieces by contemporary composers such as Keith Jarrett and Sting and original compositions.

Grant and Matheny spice up their performances with personal stories, impromptu vocal riffs and playful camaraderie, drawing from a legacy that reaches back to vaudeville performers such as Williams and Walker and Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, as well as the jazz duo of Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines.

Grant and Matheny also will hold a workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old Siskiyou Barn. The workshop's focus will be on the collaborative process of performing as a duo and the elements needed for creating an effective performance. The workshop is open to instrumentalists of all types. Admission to the workshop is $10, $5 for Siskiyou Institute members and free for students.

Tickets to Friday's show cost $20, $15 for Siskiyou Institute members and $5 for students. Call 541-488-3869 or e-mail info@siskiyouinstitute.com for reservations and directions to the Old Siskiyou Barn.
