Singer Showcase

On the last Monday of every month, The Wild Goose & Bar hosts its Singer Showcase, a cross between an open mic, karaoke and a piano bar.

Local singers will come and sing a song or two, accompanied by the cafe's house band, The Mike O'Malley Trio, featuring drummer Mike O'Malley, pianist Dal Carver and upright bassist Dave Miller.

Most singers perform jazz standards, but the trio occasionally gets requests for "Mustang Sally," a Beatles' hit or country/blues songs.

"It's contingent on us knowing the tune," Carver says. "None of us are young."

Vocalist Peggy Rose, who is in her 80s, started the tradition nearly a decade ago and continues to make regular appearances, singing swinging, straight-ahead jazz.

"She's a real crowd-pleaser," Carver says.

The Singer Showcase will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the cafe, 2365 Ashland St., Ashland. Next month, the showcase will be Wednesday, Dec. 12, Rose's birthday, rather than on Christmas Eve. Call 541-488-4103.

"We don't exclude bad singers, but we've been lucky to get a lot of good ones," Carver says.
