Chamber Music Concerts' new season

St. Lawrence String Quartet will present the first performance of Chamber Music Concerts' 2011-2012 season. Shows are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, and 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

Friday's performance will feature Beethoven's Quartet in A major, Op. 18, No. 5; Erich Korngold's String Quartet No. 3 in D major, Op. 34; and John Adams' String Quartet, composed in 2008 for the St. Lawrence quartet.

Saturday's concert will include Haydn's Quartet in C major, Op. 74, No. 1; Osvaldo Golijov's "Yiddishbbuk," composed in 1992 for St. Lawrence; and Antonin Dvorak's String Quartet No. 13 in G major, Op. 106.

St. Lawrence String Quartet established itself among world-class chamber ensembles of its generation since winning the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992.

Established in 1989, the quartet celebrated its 20th anniversary by recording quartets written by Haydn and Dvorak through the group's partnership with ArtistShare.com.

This year sees St. Lawrence performing new works by Adams and Golijov. The quartet premiered Adams' composition at The Juilliard School. The quartet's recording of Golijov's "Yiddishbbuk" was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Early in their career, members of St. Lawrence studied with the Emerson, Tokyo and Juilliard string quartets. They are educators themselves. They've held the position of Ensemble in Residence at Stanford University since 1998. There, they work with music students, collaborate with faculty and host an annual summer chamber-music seminar.

Violist Lesley Robertson hails from Edmonton, Alberta. Cellist Christopher Costanza is from Utica, N.Y., and violinists Geoff Nuttall and Scott St. John are from London, Ontario.
