Castle Jazz Trio at 4 Daughters

Keyboardist Ron Rosenthal, bassist Richard Meyer and drummer Jake Phelps-Ransom will present a mix of smooth jazz, pop and rock at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 4 Daughters, 126 W. Main St., Medford.

The two musicians are long-time friends and recording artists. Phelps-Ransom is a percussionist for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and is working on its production of "The Music Man." Meyer has taught music at Southern Oregon University and other schools.

Rosenthal grew up in Los Angeles and studied music at California State University at Northridge. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1996, and he has maintained his connections with studio session musicians working in Southern California.

"It lets me keep my hand in the music industry at one of the major markets," Rosenthal says.

The road goes both ways. Rosenthal travels to L.A. for various recording projects, and his friends in California come to Jacksonville to record at his studio, Pipe Dream Productions.

"I just finished mixing and mastering a jazz fusion CD featuring Richard and sidemen Chad Wackerman on drums and Ken Rosser on guitar," Rosenthal says. "I submitted the CD to IM Management based out of L.A. and was offered a management contract."

Rosenthal is one of several musicians in the region who provide music for film, commercials, independent projects and other musicians' recordings from his studio.

He received national exposure when he co-wrote "City Under the Sea" with jazz artist David Diggs.

Local sax player Kent Heyward will be sitting in with the Castle Jazz Trio at 4 Daughters. There is no cover for the show. Call 779-4455.
