Beat of the Rogue

Beat of the Rogue

Five world-class marching bands will perform at the fourth annual Beat of the Rogue, held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at the U.S. Cellular Community Park, 300 Lowry Lane, Medford.

Participating bands are the Oregon Crusaders, the Blue Knights (Denver, Colo.), the Santa Clara Vanguard, the Vanguard Cadets (both of Santa Clara, Calif.,) and Thunder (Spokane, Wash.).

Each corps features between 60 and 150 brass, percussion and color guard performers ages 14 to 21.

"It's music in motion," says Mike Koch, executive director of Thunder. "It's color and pageantry. Imagine being able to remember and perform your music in a particular posture while you are walking sideways, backwards and turning circles with an instrument in your hands."

Music ranges from classical to contemporary, and some groups manage to squeeze as many as nine songs into their short sets.

The Oregon Crusaders, formerly the Southern Oregon Crusaders, were founded in Medford in 1999 but relocated to Portland in 2002. The band's 2013 repertoire includes "Summertime" by George Gershwin, "Going Home" by Antonin Dvorak and Williams Arms Fisher, "Fallin' " by Alicia Keys, "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, and five other songs.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $18 and $25 at the gate, $15 and $20 in advance and are available at the Santo Community Center, 701 N. Columbus Ave., Medford, or by calling 541-774-2400. Proceeds benefit Medford Parks and Recreation Department's Play Every Day youth scholarship fund and also go toward local projects by the Kiwanis Club.
