Battle of the Bones heats up this weekend

The annual Battle of the Bones barbecue competition is hotter than ever. Ten teams will cook chili, pulled pork and chicken to see who takes home bragging rights for the best barbecue and a share of the $10,000 prize this weekend at Twin Creeks Park, 555 Twin Creeks Crossing Loop, Central Point.

Grants Pass band The Roadsters and the KRWQ 100.3 Country Showdown will kick off the event from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 22. Chicken and shrimp kabobs will be available for $3 and $4, respectively.

The pulled-pork competition will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, and the barbecued-chicken competition at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 24. A chili competition will be held Saturday and Sunday.

Tasting tickets cost $5 for the chili, $10 for the pork or chicken. Visitors can vote for their favorite teams.

Pork ribs will be available for $2 throughout the weekend at the Central Point Parks and Recreation Foundation booth, and rib-eating contests will be held each day. The entry fee is $10, and contestants have three minutes to eat all the ribs they can to win prizes.

More than 30 craft beers will be on tap at the event, along with wines from five regional wineries. A $10 ticket buys a souvenir glass and 16, 2-ounce tastes of beer or 10, 1-ounce tastes of wine. Ticket holders can vote for their favorites.

Kids' activities include a 65-foot, inflatable dragon and two other jump houses. Balloon artists will tie free balloons from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Face painting and games will be available for small fees.

A beer garden and live music also highlight the family event.

Local bands SnakeBite, Groove DeVille, The Mixers and 221 Fly perform Saturday at noon, 2:20, 4:40 and 7 p.m., respectively. The Robbie DaCosta Trio plays at 11:40 a.m. Sunday, the Ben Rice Band at 2 p.m.

The live music is strictly entertainment at this year's Battle of the Bones, not a band competition. Battle of the Bones winning barbecue chefs will be announced at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Tasting tickets are available at Jackson County branches of US Bank, Central Point City Hall or at www.battleofthebones.com. Advance tickets cost $9 for two or more. Proceeds will benefit Central Point Parks and Recreation.
