At The Playwright Public House

Foxfire Trio, Flat Five String Band, HartSmith, duo Cyndi Harvell and Jesse Brewster and songwriter John Elliott fill the bills this weekend at The Playwright Public House in Ashland.

The Foxfire Trio, featuring Ashland string musicians Bob Evoniuk, Jeff Jones and Glenn Freese, will play its very own "hip, not hick" version of bluegrass at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the pub, 258 A St., Ashland. The trio's music, laden with three-part harmonies, evokes memories of that first wave of acoustic bluegrass and rock played by David Grisman, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall, among others.

Next up, Ashland's Flat Five String Band will present a set of gypsy jazz, modern swing — courtesy of such bands as Squirrel Nut Zippers and Red Stick Ramblers — and 1920s, '30s and '40s swing standards at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The cover charge is $5. The band also plays originals influenced by Django Reinhardt but with the electric guitar of more modern composers.

Jazz duo HartSmith plays at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, followed by Cyndi Harvell and Jesse Brewster at 8 p.m.

Harvell is a Georgia native who moved west eight years ago. She plays folk-rock with a modern, pop edge, often billed as simply Americana. She's on the road this month with Brewster, who describes his rock and Americana mix as a barroom brawl between Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young and John Mayer.

California singer and songwriter John Elliott will close out The Playwright's all-star lineup at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25. Elliott has been on the road since 2006, developed a cultlike following across the country and put 252,120 miles on his Honda Civic, named "Glen." His original, rootsy songs can be heard on several popular television shows, including "Grey's Anatomy," "One Tree Hill" and "Californication."
