Mavs lose, settle for No. 2 seed in state tourney

The North Medford Mavericks were a half a step away from earning the top seed for Area 4 in the American Legion A state tournament on Sunday at North Medford High School.

But North Coos' shortstop made a backhanded grab on a would-have-been game-tying infield single by the Maverick's Colin Sower's in the bottom of the seventh as Waterfront rallied to top the Mavs, 5-4.

After the grab, the ensuing toss to second base by Waterfront's shortstop barely beat the Mavericks' Stephen Cole to the bag.

Waterfront scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to knot it 4-all.

With the loss, the Mavericks settled for the second seed in the state tournament — which begins Thursday — while North Coos earned the top spot for Area 4.

Sowers was 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Mavericks (40-9, 25-3 Area 4), who received a 2-for-2 effort and a fourth inning RBI-single from Hayden Wolfe.

Charlie Sebrell went 2-for-3 and earned the victory from the mound for Ashland (30-11) while striking out five.

PORTLAND JAVALINAS 4, S.O. RIVERDOGS 3 — At Portland, the Southern Oregon RiverDogs' pitching excelled, but the defense committed five errors — including a key mistake in the 10th inning — and Portland beat the RiverDogs at Walker Field.

The RiverDogs (19-14, 10-8 NW Collegiate Baseball League) rallied to tie the game 3-all in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run single from Jared Adamson.

Adamson had three hits on the day while Josh Suarez and Allen Smith combined to blank the Javelinas, allowing only five hits and they each struck out six for the RiverDogs.
