Allred tied for third after Day 1 of Q-school

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Ashland native Jason Allred is tied for third after shooting a 6-under par 66 on the first day of the six-round PGA Tour National Qualifying Tournament on Wednesday at Orange County National.

Allred was buoyed by a double-eagle and four birdies during the round on the Crooked Cat course.

Frank Lickliter II and Brendon de Jonge each shot 10-under 62s to tie for the lead.

The top 25 finishers and ties will earn 2008 PGA Tour cards, while the next number of players nearest 50 will get full Nationwide Tour exemptions. The remaining players in the 166-man field will receive conditional Nationwide Tour status.

Brett Rumford also shot a 66 on Crooked Cat, and Matthew Every and David Lutterus opened with 66s at Panther Lake.

Harrison Frazar, Bob Heintz, Todd Demsey, Travis Perkins, D.H. Lee, D.A. Points, Matt Hansen and Tommy Gainey shot 67s, while four-time tour winner Carlos Franco topped a group at 68 that included Ted Purdy, Jim McGovern and Gavin Coles.

Colt Knost, the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, shot a 75.
