Tornado secures key SWC win

North Medford did its best work with its back against the wall in a 7-4 Southwest Conference baseball victory over Roseburg Tuesday at North Medford High.

All the runs for the Black Tornado (9-7, 5-4 SWC) came with two outs. Five were generated with no one on and two outs.

“I attribute that to perseverance and good approaches at the plate,” said North coach Brett Wolfe. “Their kid was pretty good on the mound. We had to compete and keep battling and take advantage of our opportunities. We preach two-out base hits and work on it.”

The Tornado’s win over the Indians (9-6, 5-3) helped keep the SWC standings jumbled. The top six teams are within one game of each other in the standings.

North’s two biggest hits were a two-run triple by Quinton Rumrey in the sixth inning, breaking a 4-4 deadlock, and a two-run double by Justin Geyer in the third.

Rumrey’s hit came after Ryan Sandoval was hit by a pitch, stole second and was sacrificed to third. Jonathan Gassman then walked ahead of Rumrey’s deep drive to the left-field corner.

Brandon King singled in Rumrey.

Geyer’s double was a shot into the gap in left-center field.

Kasey Buchanan was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Tornado.

Sandoval pitched the first five innings. He allowed four hits, fanned seven and walked two. Tristan Drewien hurled two hitless frames for the win, striking out one and walking one.

Ashland (9-4, 6-4 MWL) added an insurance run in the fourth when Sanderson drove in leadoff hitter Kellar Edwards with a single to right-center.

Fuller, who was 2-for-4 at the plate, allowed a run in each of the first two innings before limiting the Eagles (6-8, 4-6) to one run on one hit over the next four innings. He gave up three earned runs on three hits overall.
