Tornado leads way in SWC all-star voting

North Medford had four first-team picks, two second-teamers and won two of the three big individual honors in Southwest Conference softball all-star voting.

In a vote by the league’s coaches, North Medford senior Rylan Austin was named Pitcher of the Year and first-year head coach Chris Campbell Coach of the Year.

Earning first-team honors for the Tornado were Austin, senior second baseman Alex Barry, junior catcher Chelby Smalley and sophomore shortstop Lauren Barry.

Austin, who’s headed to Montana State University Billings on an athletic scholarship, won 11 of 12 decisions in SWC play with a 1.24 ERA, 96 strikeouts and 15 walks. She also batted .545 with four home runs, seven doubles, two triples and 32 RBIs.

“That’s just a great honor for (Austin),” Campbell said. “That’s a kid that’s put in a lot of offseason work, had a phenomenal season in the circle and gave us 110 percent every day. I couldn’t be more proud of her and she got the award that she deserves.”

Smalley batted a team-best .558 with five doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs in league play, while Alex Barry batted .484 with 21 RBIs. Lauren Barry hit .463 and led the team with seven triples and 34 runs scored.

The Tornado also had two second-team outfielders: senior Lily Gann and sophomore Grace Johnson. Gann batted .404 with four doubles and Johnson batted .339 with three doubles and 19 RBIs.

The honorable mention list included another three North Medford players and seven South Medford Panthers.

In his first year at the helm Campbell guided the Tornado to a SWC championship with a 16-2 league mark and to the OSAA Class 6A state semifinals. North Medford, which finished 25-5 overall, suffered a season-ending loss to Clackamas, 8-7, on Tuesday. When asked about the Coach of the Year award, he said it was more of a team honor.

“That’s the hard work of all my coaches and all my kids buying in to the system and putting together a phenomenal year,” Campbell said.
