Tornado hangs tough to remain undefeated

Although still on the road, North Medford's boys basketball team finally got to wear its home white uniforms on Wednesday in Lake Oswego.

Turns out the Black Tornado can win in those, too.

Junior point guard Derek Mautz knocked down a career-high five 3-pointers to finish with 16 points and Jared Knox again came up with timely production to lead North Medford to a 67-64 overtime win against Southridge in the championship game of the Lakeside Holiday Classic at Lakeridge High.

The win marked North Medford's sixth straight triumph to open the season — all coming away from its friendly confines in Medford.

"To win six road games in a row like this is really quite an effort," said North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn, whose team will finally play at home Tuesday to open the Abby's Holiday Classic.

Knox chipped in with 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in OT, while Michael Osmanski added nine points and reserves Jarrett Artale and Marcus Ellis each scored eight.

The teams waged a back-and-forth battle for the bulk of the contest, with Southridge camping 6-foot-8 junior Sean McGill in the middle of a zone defense to limit North's opportunities. The Skyhawks opened a seven-point lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Tornado's defense sparked a rally that allowed the lead to change hands.

After a Knox basket gave North a late lead in the fourth, McGill powered in an inside basket to send the contest to overtime.

The teams traded three baskets in the early going of the extra session, but the Tornado's shots were all beyond the arc by Knox and Mautz to provide separation. Mautz added a late free throw for a three-point lead, and Jordan Browne-Moore blocked a last-second attempt to tie by Southridge.

North finished with 12 3-pointers overall, with Mautz going 5-for-6.

"They were playing zone all night and we just kept knocking them out," added Plankenhorn.

Bonhan Stafford had 14 points to lead Southridge (4-3), while McGill finished with 10.
