SUBARU CLASSIC: Crater rolls past St. Mary's

Crater wasted little time sending a message Thursday that its boys basketball team will be one to be reckoned with in the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic.

Using a stout defense and the pure shooting touch of sophomore Nate Bittle to set the tone, the Class 5A Comets opened a 17-5 lead on 3A St. Mary’s and cruised to a 70-47 victory in first-round play for the three-day, eight-team tournament at Cascade Christian High.

“We had a really good first quarter and got off to a good start,” said Crater head coach Chris Schmerbach. “Our defense was really good. We put pressure on the ball and that allowed us to get out in transition.”

The 6-foot-10 Bittle knocked down three of his four 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to pace Crater (6-3). Bittle, who was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 9-for-14 overall, also finished with eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

“I thought (Hunter) Chubb did a really nice job of organizing the offense for us,” added Schmerbach, “then Nate kind of took over for us. He was attacking the basket and finding his open spot from the outside.”

Crater senior Nathan Horton added 13 points and five assists, while junior Kruger Edwards had 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Comets will face Dayton in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal tonight.

“We’re just looking to try to improve every time we step on the floor,” said Schmerbach. “It’s been a good game here and a good game there but we haven’t been real consistent and put a handful of consistent games together. This will give us a chance to play against a really good opponent and try to put multiple games together heading into league play.”

St. Mary’s was limited to single digits in each of the first two quarters to fall behind 29-13 at the break but caught fire in the third quarter to tally 25 points in the frame.

Trevahn Foster, a 6-5 junior post, scored eight of his 11 points in the third quarter, while Aliiloa Kaeo-Wailehua notched six of his 10 points in the period for the Crusaders (6-5).

Foster added nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

St. Mary’s will play Phoenix at 10:30 a.m. today in the consolation bracket.
