Ashley Wolfard and Cassie Fleming came up big on Tuesday, helping deliver the first Southwest Conference victory of the season for the South Medford softball team.
Wolfard pitched a solid one-run game while Fleming’s timely single put South Eugene in an early hole it was not able to recover from en route to a 5-1 win for the Panthers at South Medford High.
With the Panthers (3-8, 1-4 SWC) ahead in the bottom of the third inning and the bases loaded, Fleming rapped a two-run single to bolster South’s lead to 4-0.
Fleming finished 2-for-2 while Wolfard struck out two over six innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and two walks.
South Eugene dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the SWC.

EAGLE POINT 6, THURSTON 1: At Eagle Point, sophomore pitcher Riley Shopp didn’t allow an earned run and struck out nine in a MWL complete-game victory.
Samantha Thompson rapped two hits, including a first-inning RBI double, for the Eagles (7-4, 3-2 MWL) and Emma Stevens scored what proved to be the winning run when she walked in the second and eventually scored on an error.
Maddie Wood rapped an RBI double in the third for the Eagles.
Eagle Point’s Shopp and Gillian Willis also had two hits each.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7, ILLINIOIS VALLEY 6: After Illinois Valley rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the Southern Cascade League opener, Cascade Christian freshman Ali Modrell worked her way around the bases in the bottom of the frame to score the winning run at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Modrell walked in the bottom of the seventh and soon stole second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Makenna Payne put Modrell on third base, she scored the winning run on a wild pitch for the Challengers (7-6, 1-0 SCL).
Modrell finished 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, Katelyn Willard was 3-for-3 with one run and two RBIs and Mia Mayben had two hits, three runs and one RBI against the Cougars (5-6, 0-1).
