South Medford attacks early, rolls Foothill

REDDING, Calif. — With a hefty upcoming schedule after a week off from competition, the South Medford baseball team needed to find its rhythm in a tune-up game on Monday.

The Panthers wasted no time when Nate Namanny's three-run double capped a six-run first inning for South Medford, which cruised to an 8-4 victory over host Foothill.

The Panthers' other scheduled game for Monday wit h Shasta was called off due to rain.

Namanny, a left-handed hitter, drove the ball into a crosswind down the left-field line to the wall, sending three Panthers home.

Brandon Dollarhide went 3-for-4 and had three stolen bases for South Medford (3-1), which broke out for a season-high 12 hits.

"It was nice to see the bats come alive at this point in the season," said South Medford coach Ray Smith. "With Dollarhide in the leadoff spot, he was the catalyst for us today."

South's Andrew Phillips captured the victory, throwing five innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on four hits with four walks to go with four strikeouts. Josh Havird spelled Phillips in the sixth inning and tossed two shutout innings.

Havird and Dylan Albertson, who hit a solo home run, each went 2-for-4.

CRATER DROPS TWO — At Fresno, Calif., Crater suffered a pair of losses to open play in the 41st annual Easter Baseball Classic.

Dustin Lathrop's two-run single plated Andrew Tracy and Zach Zelecki in a 6-2 loss to Fresno High in the 36-team tournament. Fresno left-hander Anthony Ocegueda notched 14 strikeouts.

Bryce Crawford belted a two-run home run and added an RBI double in a 9-8 loss to Mt. Whitney of Visalia, Calif. Corey Wynant, Mike Macuk and Derek Cartwright also had two hits for the Comets (3-4).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 18, NORTH VALLEY 4, 5 inn. — Cascade Christian rolled up 14 runs in the first inning and soared past North Valley in a nonconference victory at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Brandi Johnson's bases-clearing double gave the Challengers (4-4) a 9-0 lead in the first inning. Johnson also scored three runs in the contest.

Challengers pitcher Jasmine Gomez picked up the win and also went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored three times. Nikki Jones was 2-for-3.

Cami Million had a triple and two RBIs for the Knights (0-5).
