The South Medford softball team pushed Sheldon to the limit in the second game of a Southwest Conference doubleheader Friday, but Irish pitcher Camille Leach shut the door to preserve a hard-fought sweep for the visitors at South Medford High.
Thanks to a solid outing by starting pitcher Maddie Dalke, the Panthers threatened to surprise visiting Sheldon after freshman Matlyn Leetch delivered an RBI single to drive in Ashley Wolfard and cut Sheldon’s lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth. But with runners on first and third and two out, Leach came through with an inning-ending strikeout.
South Medford’s Jaden Alexander came through with a two-out single to keep the Panthers’ hopes alive in the bottom of the seventh, but Leach came through again by striking out the next better to end the game and clinch the sweep.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 4-14 overall, 2-10 in the SWC. Sheldon improved to 17-4 and 9-4.
In the opener, which went only five innings, Leach struck out seven without a walk to pick up the win, while Sheldon sophomore Jordan Henderson hit three doubles.
In the second game, Leach and Tamya Woodard hit doubles and Sheldon catcher Emma Neuman homered.
