Sheldon fends off Panthers' upset bid

EUGENE — South Medford had defending Southwest Conference volleyball champion Sheldon on the ropes Tuesday.

But the Panthers could not finish off the Irish, who rallied for a 25-16, 20-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-11 victory.

After losing the opener, the Panthers grabbed the momentum by winning the next two games.

"We were playing with a real high energy level," South Medford coach Adam Wagman said. "Our serve-receive was great. We were real cohesive as a unit."

Sheldon turned the tables on South by jumping out to leads of 9-0 and 11-1 in the fourth game.

"We let up and got into a bad spin," said Wagman. "The fourth game was the big turning point."

South battled the Irish to an 8-8 tie in the decisive fifth game, but Sheldon went on a 7-3 run to close out the match.

The Panthers (8-3, 0-2 SWC) were led by senior outside hitter Kinzie Towry's 19 kills. Carli Sash had 27 digs, while setter Sara George distributed 45 assists. Senior middles Lauren Thompson and Tori Glover registered 31/2 blocks apiece.

"We went up there and competed well," said Wagman. "They ran roughshod over us in the first game and we didn't fold. Now we need to take that next step of giving the high level of effort in every game. We have to get over the hump against these better teams."

NORTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 1 — At Grants Pass, North Medford started slow but rallied for an 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 victory in Southwest Conference action.

Grants Pass led by as much as eight in the opener, with Chelsey Chamberlain notching six of her 16 kills in that game.

The Black Tornado (15-2, 2-0 SWC) slowed the tempo after the opener to help regain control of the match. Erica Schultz went on a six-point serving run to help North win the second game. Schultz also had a career-high 17 digs and three blocks in the match.

Whitney Hodnett had 12 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Tornado, while Andrea Egge added 14 digs, eight kills and three aces.

Setter Monica Jordan had seven kills and six digs for the Cavers (3-1, 1-1 SWC), while Amber Franko added 10 digs.

ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH EUGENE 0 — At Roseburg, Roseburg took control early and received 30 assists from Anna Palotai to top South Eugene, 25-14, 25-21, 25-15.

Katelyn Powers logged nine kills and nine digs for the Indians.

Southern Sky

CRATER 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Crater used its intensity and passing to deliver a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 Southern Sky Conference victory.

Libero Reanne Allen racked up 20 digs for the Comets (2-4, 2-1 SSC) and Taylor Nackey recorded eight kills and four aces.

EAGLE POINT 3, MAZAMA 1 — At Klamath Falls, Katie Jolliffe helped Eagle Point get a Southern Sky win, putting up 17 kills, in the Eagles' 19-25, 25-11, 25-12, 25-14 victory.

Ashley Josephson also chipped in with 21 digs and 20 assists for Eagle Point (2-1 SSC), while Marsha DeVaughn had 29 digs and Kayla Mathis added 14 kills.
