Shaffer, Toney earn all-state recognition

Eagle Point's punter and a Phoenix receiver/defensive back were recognized by the coaches as the Class 5A and 4A all-state football lists were released Wednesday.

Eagle Point senior Jake Shaffer earned 5A first-team honors, while Phoenix senior Austin Toney was a 4A honorable mention on both offense and defense.

Oregon's all-state list is voted on by the coaches.

Marist senior quarterback Logan Silver was named the 5A offensive player of the year and his teammate, senior defensive lineman Logan Mayes, was the defensive player of the year. Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence was named 5A coach of the year after leading the Bowmen to a 26-23 state championship victory over Marist.

Sherwood and Marist dominated the 5A list with five first-team selections apiece.

On the 4A side, Baker senior quarterback Jesse Brown was voted the offensive player of the year, while Baker senior defensive end Jake Skillings earned defensive POY honors. Baker head coach David Johnson made it a clean sweep by the state champion Bulldogs by claiming the coach of the year award.

Overall, Baker led the way in 4A football with six all-state picks — five first-teamers and a second-teamer.
