Kyle Seutter doesn't mind working the late shift.
The South Medford senior closed out his team's game against Class 5A Ashland on the mound and then hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning on Friday to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 triumph.
Dylan Albertson, who scored the winning run, had doubled to get on base in the nonconference victory at Harry & David Field.
Lucas Stone tripled home Ian Kendall and scored on a passed ball in the first inning for Ashland to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
"After that first inning we made our two errors, then tightened it up and made some good defensive plays to pull it out," first-year South Medford head coach Ray Smith said. "We did a good job of keeping them at bay."
Seutter, who entered in the eighth, earned his first win of the year on the mound. Stone led off the inning with a double and then Seutter allowed a walk. After a failed bunt attempt, the next Ashland batter blooped to second baseman Ryan Wellock, who made the difficult catch and throw to Albertson for a force out that provided the Panthers a chance to snap the tie.
Brandon Dollarhide made three deep catches — two in left-center and one in right-center — for South (2-0), which turned three double plays to keep Ashland at bay.
Josh Havird registered an RBI single in the third and faced just 10 batters in three innings on the mound. Bryson Lake scored the Panthers' second run on a passed ball.
Brady Thomas, Stone and Kendall combined to throw a three-hitter for the Grizzlies (1-1).
