Scarminach runs wild in romp

EUGENE — Ashland High's strategy of getting the ball into the hands of its best playmaker is working wonders for both Jake Scarminach and the Grizzlies.

The senior quarterback/running back/wide receiver parlayed another stellar all-around performance into a 46-12 nonconference win over Willamette on Friday, the Grizzlies' second straight victory after an 0-2 start.

Scarminach gained 352 yards of total offense — including 210 rushing — and had a hand in six of Ashland's seven touchdowns, as the Grizzlies built a 27-6 halftime lead to win going away.

"I think it all starts up front," Scarminach said. "The linemen had a great night tonight and I was able to get out into space."

Fellow quarterback Jake McCoy completed 6 of 7 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and Talen Heater hauled in two receptions for 66 yards for the Grizzlies, who took advantage of five turnovers by the struggling Wolverines (0-4).

Ashland racked up 471 yards of total offense with a balanced attack and only punted once.

"I feel like we're turning things around," Scarminach said. "We kind of got our mojo back. We're playing good football now and we're starting to come together."
