Sanford, host Comets roll at Invite

CENTRAL POINT — Backed by stellar pitching, Bruce Sanford provided the Crater baseball team with some extra pop in the Crater Spring Break Invitational on Wednesday.

The Comets allowed just two hits and Sanford hit a grand slam during Crater's 12-run third inning to advance to the championship game in a 13-1 romp over Franklin at Anhorn Field.

Crater (4-0) will face Eagle High School of Idaho in the title game today at 7 p.m.

A scoreless game through two innings, the Comets found their rhythm in the third.

After the Comets built a 3-0 lead in the inning, Sanford's slam left no room for a Franklin comeback. Franklin also walked six and hit three batters in the frame.

Sanford wound up going 2-for-2 with four RBIs, two runs and two walks.

Comets starter Justin Morgan, who moved to 3-0 on the season, threw no-hit ball through three innings of work to go with five strikeouts.

Freshman Ronnie Herndon fanned two in the fourth frame and Sanford struck out the side in the fifth. Each allowed one hit.

Also for the Comets, Kos Ray and Andrew Tracy drove in two runs apiece.
