Rogue Valley Classic set for Saturday

Twenty-eight volleyball teams from around the state will compete in the 26th annual Rogue Valley Classic on Saturday.

Action begins at 8 a.m. with pool play. Matches will take place at North Medford, South Medford and Central Medford High.

The popular invitational, which culminates with championship bracket play, is headlined by Class 6A's Roseburg, Aloha, North Medford and Sheldon, 5A's Summit, Eagle Point, Marshfield and Ashland and 4A's Crook County and Hidden Valley.

The other local teams competing are Crater, Cascade Christian and St. Mary's.

Last year, the Black Tornado won three of its six pool-play games to earn a spot in the 16-team championship bracket before falling to Clackamas, 25-13, 25-23, in the first round.

Hidden Valley suffered a similar fate, coming up short against Sunset in the first round.

Jesuit defeated Sunset, 25-23, 25-14, to claim the Rogue Valley Classic title in 2010. The Crusaders of Portland, who have won the last four championships, are not returning to defend their crown.

In 2009, Jesuit beat Barlow in the title match, 25-23, 25-19. The Crusaders topped West Linn in 2008 and North Medford in 2007.

Sunset is back this year, but Barlow and West Linn are not.
