Rogue River takes over Sunset lead

WHITE CITY — Rogue River demonstrated a lot of grit against Cascade Christian in a battle of Sunset League undefeated baseball teams Friday.

The Chieftains rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to post a 7-5 come-from-behind victory at Memorial Field.

The win improves Rogue River (12-5) to 7-0 in Sunset play, while the Challengers (9-5) fell to 5-1 in league play.

Trailing 5-3 entering the sixth inning, Rogue River opened the inning with three consecutive singles. Jon Garcia led off with a single, Aaron Longtain got on with an infield single and Craig Lee followed with an RBI single.

After Longtain scored on a passed ball to tie the game 5-all, Lee got thrown out in a rundown on a grounder hit by Kelly White, who went to second on the play. Christian Reyes reached on an error and Tom Cermak delivered an RBI single that scored White with the go-ahead run. Reyes later scored on a double steal.

Cascade Christian scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Garrett Banks opened the rally with a single, Ryder West followed with a run-scoring double and Steven Spence hit an RBI single.

For Cascade Christian, Wes Litton, West, Banks and Spence collected two hits apiece.

Brendan Schoner had two hits for the Chieftains.

Sunset League Softball

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 6, ROGUE RIVER 3 — Bree Luzney's two-run single in the sixth inning gave Cascade Christian some breathing room in a Sunset League contest at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Amanda Kinney added an RBI double and Brandi Johnson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Challengers (9-5, 5-1 Sunset), who outscored Rogue River 6-2 from the fourth inning on.

McKenzie Cates had a two-run double in the sixth for the Chieftains (6-6, 4-3), while Dakota Coldsmith and Casey Pence each added two hits.

Boys Tennis

ASHLAND/NORTH MEDFORD INVITATIONAL — North Medford advanced its top two singles players and top doubles team into today's semifinals at Varsity Courts.

Colt Hoeptner, the No. 2 seed in singles, received a bye and then topped Marshfield's top singles player to earn his spot in the semis along with teammate David Tribble.

The Black Tornado tandem of Tanner Borg and Austin Schoenlein, seeded No. 1, took down Central Catholic's top doubles team to earn their spot in today's semifinal round.

South Eugene took the early lead in the team race with 56 points, with North Medford and Summit tied for second at 42. Ashland stands fourth with 41 points.

Today's semifinals will begin at 9 a.m. at North Medford High, with the championship finals slated around 11.

Boys Golf

MARIST INVITATIONAL — At Eugene, Phoenix senior Daniel Engle shot a 4-over-par 76 and tied for fourth in the 10-school event at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Arthur Kim of Tigard garnered medalist honors with a 72.

South Eugene won the tournament with a 317 total. Phoenix, only one of two Class 4A schools in the field, finished 10th at 350.
