Riddle knocks Challengers out of playoffs

RIDDLE — The Cascade Christian senior pitching duo of Jeremy Cheney and Aaron Grissom has been a major contributing factor in the Challengers' charge to the District 4 baseball title.

Grissom tossed a perfect game and Cheney a one-hitter during the regular season.

But host Riddle wasn't fazed with either Challenger pitcher in the Class 2A/1A state quarterfinals Friday as the Irish pounded out a 14-9 victory.

Cheney allowed five hits and four earned runs in three innings, while Grissom gave up seven hits and four earned runs in three innings of relief.

"(Riddle) hit everything that was near the strike zone," said Cascade Christian assistant coach Rob Campbell. "They hit the ball really hard and really well."

After Riddle jumped on Cheney for two runs in the first inning, Cascade answered with three runs in the second to take a brief 3-2 lead.

Cheney was hit by a pitch to open the second, Ryan Pech singled, Josh Davis pounded a two-run double and Bryan Thomas followed with a run-scoring single.

But Riddle came right back with four runs on a walk, error and RBI singles by Blake Baron, Sam Briggs and Mike Ray.

Cascade Christian (21-4) never took the lead again.

Thomas' three-run homer in the sixth highlighted a four-run rally that cut the Challengers' deficit to 11-8. But the Irish responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer from Cody Creager and a two-run blast by Chad Hanson to bump the lead to 14-8.

Sophomore first baseman Pech went 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI to spark the Challengers' 12-hit attack. Thomas added two hits and four RBIs and Davis provided two hits and one RBI.

Hanson was 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the Irish.

"It was a back-and-forth game," said Campbell. "We had some miscues that hurt. Riddle came to play baseball and played well."

Riddle, the No. 3 seed from District 2, will host District 5 champion Heppner in Tuesday's semifinals.
