South Medford's Matt Pronesti is carrying the banner for local tennis players at the 12-school North Medford-Ashland Invitational boys tournament.
Pronesti, top-seeded in the No. 1 singles bracket, won one match Friday to advance into the semifinals of the two-day event at the North Medford High courts.
The tournament format has separate brackets for No. 1 through 4 slots in both singles and doubles.
Pronesti, the Class 6A state singles runner-up last year, defeated Lorne Bulling of Corvallis, 6-1, 6-3 in a first-round match then received a bye into today's semifinals.
In No. 4 singles, Nic Visconti of South Medford moved into the semifinals as did the Ashland No. 4 doubles team of George Cross and Garrett Johnson.
Summit of Bend leads the team standings with 98 points after the opening day. Defending tournament champion Sprague of Salem is second with 78. South Medford and Roseburg are tied for third (60).

KLAMATH BASIN INVITATIONAL — At Klamath Falls, Phoenix's Travis Compoy finished tied for third and Dylan Molnar of Ashland tied for fifth at the 15th annual tournament at The Running Y Resort.
Compoy put together a round of 75 and Molnar shot a 76. Sean Greenhood of Enterprise High in Redding, Calif., was the medalist with a 70.
Pleasant Valley of Chico, Calif., won the tournament with a 309 and Modoc, Calif., was second (312). Ashland finished seventh (352) and Phoenix was eighth (369).
