PREP WATER POLO: Grizz makes splash at districts

CORVALLIS — The Ashland girls and boys water polo teams won district titles Thursday and advanced to the state finals next week in Tualatin.

The Grizzly girls defeated Ridgeview, 19-2, and the boys topped North Eugene, 8-6. The matches were at Osborn Aquatic Center.

The teams will play in the four-team finals next week. The girls meet Hood River Valley and the boys face Parkrose in their first games.

On Thursday, Fiona Johnson paced the Grizzly girls with four goals, three assists and seven steals, and Sierra Pokrob had three goals, two assists and eight steals.

Rachel Sievert turned in three goals and six steals, and Malia Lucero had three scores.

Alex Westrick, Lucy Gramley and Zella Harrison each scored twice.

The Ashland boys got three goals each from Chris Frownfelter and Baylor Wiggins, and one score each from Chase Tiffany and Rileigh Orr. Hunter Oliver had three assists and two blocks.

Oliver Del Rio amassed 12 blocks and three steals, and Wiggins added three steals.
