PREP ROUNDUP: Pirate boys claim crown

KLAMATH FALLS — It wasn’t easy, but the Phoenix boys soccer team made its league championship official with Monday’s win over Mazama.

The Pirates used a second-half goal from freshman Victor Martinez to ward off the scrappy host Vikings for a 1-0 victory, giving the Pirates a three-peat in the Skyline Conference.

“It was a good victory but we had to work really, really hard to get it which is good right before the playoffs,” said Pirates coach Dennis Flenner, who collected his 14th conference title in 24 seasons. “It was a really big day for us to go undefeated but now we’ll prepare for the playoffs and move forward.”

In the 58th minute, Johnny Esquivel stole the ball at the defensive end of the field, dribbled upfield and found Martinez with a through pass. Martinez obliged by collecting, turning and firing a 30-yard shot into the net with his left foot.

Goalkeeper Moises Rivera helped the Pirates (12-0-1, 9-0-1 Skyline) keep a clean sheet with a big save while the defense of centerbacks Joe Navas, Dan Martinez, and Cornelio Carrera-Flores limited the offensive opportunities for the Vikings (7-5-1, 4-5-1).
